While I agree that "nerd" connotes intelligence and most of the intelligent democrats I know support Obama, I think that labeling him the "smart person's candidate" could actually hurt him more than help. His background is more humble than that of Bush (seriously, Obama's dad wasn't president, come on american voters!) and yet Bush's reluctance to embrace rational thought and common english grammar have helped him in the past. Still, the blue-collar democratic vote has been cast for Clinton. I don't get it. Why would those working-class citizens choose to vote for someone whose campaign is advertising with the money of big corporations? Why don't they respect and admire Obama for all the diversity he has overcome?
Could it be, perhaps, that the very attributes he has worked hard to attain (many of them characteristic of, I don't know, say...the founding fathers?) are detrimental to the commander-in-chief? Is it really more important for us to have a president who can smash beer cans on his/her head rather than use that very same head for deciding on important domestic and foreign affais?
It's a little sad that intelligence is a liability in these elections. I would hope America wanted the smartest, most apt person for the job. What a nerd I am.
